1726, Samuel Butler's satirical mock-heroic poem. This is the first edition to contain the William Hogarth copper plate engravings and the edition used by Dr. Johnson for his dictionary. Please see photos to confirm this. Fifteen copper plate engravings in total, of which 5 are fold-out plates, 10 others are full page with 2 hand-tinted. Includes frontis of Mr Samuel Butler. Numerous woodcut head & tail pieces. Book is in remarkably good condition considering the age of the book, with a strong, sound, tight binding/hinges - no loose pages, no damp. Printed by T.W. for D. Browne, J. Walthoe, J. Knapton, R. Knaplock, J.& R. Sprint, D. Midwinter, J. Tonson, J. Osborne, and T. Longman, A. Bettesworth, R. Robinson, F. Fayram, W. Mears, W. and J. Innys, T. Woodward, F. Clay, B. Mottle and M. Poulson. Early binding with vellum spine, hand-writing to spine and ruled not raised lines across spine. Neat literary notation on verso of last index page written in tiny writing presumably by the original owner, Mr William B N Coxon, whose name is printed on front endpaper. 15 x 10 cm, 424pp + 21 pp index. Minimal wear to extremities, a touch worn at corners and edges, age-toned pages, scattered spotting, small pen-head size puncture at edge of spine. A charming, well-preserved and highly collectible book! Now encased in a solid modern marbled slip-case. Please see photo of slip-case. |
