1778 & 1780. 10 Volumes + 2 Volumes. Rare and Highly Collectible. Published by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens. Original tan calf boards in original calf bindings with the original binding cords. Volumes range from good to very good. Original red gilt titles to 8 volumes with 4 replica red and gold titles to 4 volumes. The Ten Volume Set is complemented by the addition of the Two Volume Supplement published 2 years later in 1780, in the same original tan calf bindings. Rarely are the 10 volume set and the 2 volume Supplement available in their entirety. Examples of selections in the 10 volumes are: an engraved frontis of Shakespeare with accompanying poem by Ben Jonson; a facsimile hand-written note with Shakespeare's signature; and a fold-out engraving of Morris Dancers for K. Henry IV and so much more. The 2 volume Supplement is entitled "Supplement to the Edition of Shakspeare's Plays Published in 1778 by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens in Two Volumes Containing Additional Observations By Several of The Former Commentators: To Which are Subjoined The Genuine Poems of the Same Author and Seven Plays that have been Ascribed to him". The First Supplement has an engraved frontis of Henry Wriothesly, The Earl of Southampton; it also includes a fold-out entitled "The Platt of the Second Parte of the Seven Deadlie Sinns" which includes a 'dumbshow'. The Second Supplement has an engraved frontis of "The House in Stratford upon Avon in Which Shakespeare was Born". Bindings on both the 10 Volume Set and the 2 Volume Supplements are a little fragile given these are the original bindings and cords. Tan calf boards are in good condition with some general marks & rubbing to covers and at edges. There is an early owner inscription dated 1779. Scattered foxing. Some nicks, loss, wear at spines, edges, corners; a couple of volumes have some ancient watermarks on rear pages; there are a few minor paper repairs. Over-all an historic and collectible set.
