1899 & 1900. FIRST EDITIONS OF THIS 4 VOLUME SET. Vol. I: From the Low Countries to Egypt [1899] with frontispiece of Napoleon Bonaparte, 362 pp.14 pp Pub Ads; Vol. II: The Struggle for the Sea [1899] with frontispiece of Nelson 323pp + 4pp Pub Ads; Vol. III: The War in the Peninsula [1900] with frontispiece of Wellington, 416 pp + 4 pp Pub Ads; Vol. IV: Waterloo and St. Helena [1900] with frontispiece of Blucher; 424 pp + 8 pp Pub Ads. Vol 4 has a facsimile letter written by Wellington to Lord Beresford. There is a plate of Napoleon 'Laid Out' 14 hours after his death. The red covers are mottled at the spine and a little on front and back boards. Throughout the 4 vols there are many portraits of the principal protagonists in the war. All 4 vols are strong, tight & clean internally; tissue guard protectors foxed but little else throughout the 4 volumes. Really very clean. Hinges excellent. No bookplates. No inscriptions. Original red bindings with gold gilt titles & gilt to head edges. The red outer boards are sun-faded and mottled particularly at the spine with loss to one volume. Please see photos. All have gilt profiles stamped on each cover which correspond with the frontispieces so Volume One has a gold emblem of Napoleon; Volume Two Nelson etc...
