Chapman & Hall, 193 Piccadilly. This is the novel that Dickens considered his best work & was originally serialised in 1843-44. Intricate gold gilt etching; gilt titles to spine; five raised bands. Quarter bound in red leather & marbled boards with marbled endpapers, all in beautiful condition, plus marbling to all edges. The printer Virtue & Co printed many of the early Dickens editions. The author dedicated the book to his friend Miss Burdett Coutts 'with the true and earnest regard of The Author'. The UK & America both feature, with the principal themes being of greed, selfishness & corruption. Vol 1, 436 pp, with 16 illustrations; Vol 2, 438 pp, also with 16 illustrations. A truly lovely set with minimal wear.
